Barrel Hinges
The barrel hinge is the most common and time-tested design. It consists of interlocking metal barrels on the frame front and temple, joined by a small threaded screw. The temple pivots smoothly around the screw axis, and the joint can be tightened, repaired or re-screwed with basic tools. Barrel hinges work in both metal and plastic frames and accept a wide range of finishes.
Barrel hinges are economical to produce and easy to service, which keeps long-term return rates low. However, they can loosen over time and may require occasional tightening. When specifying barrel hinges, consider the screw threading, the number of barrels and the base metal. Stainless steel and nickel silver barrels offer good strength and corrosion resistance at a moderate cost.
Spring Hinges
A spring hinge adds a small coil or leaf spring inside the temple that lets the temple flex outward beyond its normal open position and return automatically. This flex reduces stress on the frame when the wearer stretches the temples over the head, making spring hinges popular for children's frames, sports models and everyday comfort wear.
Spring hinges cost more than barrel hinges because they contain more parts and require precise assembly, yet they reduce breakage at the temple joint and improve fit on wider faces. For a brand, they can justify a higher price point and fewer warranty claims. Specify spring hinges where comfort, resilience and a premium feel are priorities rather than the lowest possible unit cost.
Hidden Hinges
Hidden hinges are machined into the front and temple so that no hinge hardware is visible from the outside. The mechanism sits flush within the material, creating a clean, uninterrupted line across the frame. This design is common in high-end acetate and premium metal frames, where visual refinement is part of the value proposition.
Hidden hinges require more precise machining and tighter tolerances than exposed hinges, which raises production cost and demands skilled assembly. They also tend to be harder to repair if damaged. For custom programs, hidden hinges signal craftsmanship and can support premium positioning, but they should be specified with a clear understanding of the higher tooling and labor requirements.
Hingeless and Flexible Temple Designs
Some frames eliminate the screw joint altogether. Hingeless designs use flexible beta-titanium or memory-metal temples that bend and spring back without a mechanical hinge, while certain sports frames use molded flex zones. These constructions are lightweight, corrosion-resistant and resistant to screw loosening, making them well suited to active and technical product lines.
Hingeless and flex-temple designs require specialized materials and forming processes, so they typically sit at a higher cost tier. They excel where maintenance-free performance matters, such as sports, safety and children's eyewear. When evaluating these options, review the material grade and flex-life testing data to confirm the temple can withstand the intended usage cycles.

Choose hinges by aligning mechanical performance with your brand position and target price. Barrel hinges suit value-driven volumes, spring hinges add comfort and resilience, hidden hinges support premium aesthetics, and hingeless designs target technical or active niches. In each case, confirm material specification, plating or finish, screw type and torque tolerances at the sampling stage.
